Short Codes

You are probably familiar with Short Codes already even if you’ve never heard that term before. Basically, short codes are abbreviated phone numbers that can be used to send SMS or MMS messages (i.e. text messages) over mobile phones.

From a marketing standpoint short codes have several powerful uses. First, short codes are usually easier to remember than full phone numbers. Second, they can be used as a vanity brand as well (think of a flower shop using the short code ROSES which would be 76737 on a telephone keypad).

The applications are nearly endless. Let’s say a flower shop runs an ad in a magazine offering a free vase with the purchase of a dozen roses. The prospect is asked to send a text message to ROSES to receive a return text that acts as a coupon when he visits the store. All he has to do to get his free vase is show the text message to the store employee.

Or, let’s say a mortgage broker is offering a free information kit on a new loan program. The ad requires the prospect to text a short code that includes his email address in the body of the text. When the mortgage broker gets the email address he sends the free information kit to that prospect.

The other thing that this does is captures some basic information about the prospect, such as a cell phone number and (in the case of the mortgage broker) an email address. You can then use this information to send follow-up messages, special deals, new offers, etc.
